The construction industry is getting qualified. Already, many sites won’t let workers on without an appropriate card to prove their skills. And this is set to increase as we approach the industry wide deadline for a fully qualified workforce of 2010.
What is a card scheme?
A card scheme allows you to prove that you can do your job, and that you can do it safely.
The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card, for example, carries your name and photograph, says that you have passed a Health and Safety Test, and lists your qualifications.
How do I get a card?
You will need to have passed the Health and Safety Test and be qualified in your trade or profession. That usually means having an NVQ or SVQ certificate.
To get an NVQ or SVQ you will either have to complete an apprenticeship, or, if you are an experienced worker, you can get one by On-Site Assessment and Training (OSAT). This allows you to qualify by proving your expertise without having to go to college.
Normally little - if any - training is required, and there is no formal exam or test. You just collect evidence to show that you know what you are doing. That evidence is then assessed.
Once you’ve passed the Health and Safety Test and have your NVQ or SVQ, you can apply for a card by calling the Card Helpdesk on 0870 417 8777.

Do I need to do a Health and Safety Test?
Yes, The test is essential. It represents the minimum standard of knowledge you must have, and you shouldn’t go on site without it.
It consists of between 40 to 50 multiple choice questions and is conducted via computer. You select the correct answer either by using a touch sensitive computer screen, or using a mouse. There is no writing, and it takes between 45 and 60 minutes to complete.
Even after passing the test you should keep your knowledge fresh. Your life, or that of another, could depend on what you do and what you know. You will also need to retake the test every five years to renew your card.
Where can I do plant training?
Some parts of the construction industry, including plant operations, have a slightly different card scheme called the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS). For more details of CPCS accredited training providers in your area, call 0870 417 7274

I phoned the cscs helpline last Friday 27/07/07 and as I have only been tiling for just over a year they told me I could only get a labourers cscs card. If you have no qualifications you need at least 3 years working experience (so I’m told). As they have sold me the labourers card I expect to be able to tile on site once I receive a my card. I take the exam in a few weeks time. Once I have regular site work I shall obtain an NVQ from on site assessment. (well that’s the plan anyway!)
