TilersForums has a member from Sweden who spent a long time putting together some basic guides with regards to many aspects of wall and floor tiling. The tiling guides started in May 2008 and added to in 2009. The forum ‘thread’ (topic) is still open although hasn’t been replied to for some time. The guides are just that, guides, anybody using them should also seek (up to date) information and facts from their professional wall and floor tiler.

If you read the guides you will see that a lot of thought has gone into putting them together. Topics include:-

A quick guide to regular grouting using a washboy and a float

Please do read the whole thread as many contributors added their views and experiences. It is probably fair to say that sWe’s wall and floor tiling guides have helped save 10′s of thousands of pounds in failures of wall and floor tiling jobs on bathrooms, kitchens, floors, conservatories and the likes. Possibly hundreds of thousands of tiles have stayed stuck to walls and floors of customers houses a lot longer than they would perhaps have been without tilers reading and taking note of some of the important points raised in the guides.

Click here to get to the download page where you can download the PDF version of this tiling guide. You will need to register for your free forum account in order to download the free PDF.

Disclaimer: TilersForums.co.uk and / or UKTilingNews.co.uk (along with sWe, the originator of the content) do NOT take any responsibility for loss or damaged caused by using information found on any of the websites mentioned. Professional tilers’ advice should always be followed on a per-job basis. It is recommended that customers get specifications from at least three fully qualified wall and floor tilers (and not general builders, or plumbers, etc) before commencing work.

We’ve found a professional wall and floor tiler who has started a video blogging page with Tublr.com. Blogging about the daily stresses and strains of a tiler, and generally throwing in some tips and tricks to help others with their tiling, Adam Philips (AKA Onlinetiler) gives us a video or so per week to watch.

This week we’ve been luck and had two video’s, and here they are.

Let down by Contractor on a Mosaic job:-

And Adam’s first help video:-

A big thankyou to Adam for doing this, we all hope more tilers join in soon.

You can follow Adam on Twitter, Tumblr and Youtube.

TilersForums.co.uk which started out in April 2006 now has more than 7,800 active members with not a single one being pre-registered to the system. With more than 22 sponsorship deals providing support to the forum and community in one way or another, TilersForums.co.uk is just about to make the most important deal of them all.

Tile Giant which has recently become a brand under the Travis Perkins group has given the go-ahead for sponsorship and is in talks regarding superior sponsorship even.

Tile Giant currently only stock Mapei adhesives and Mapei UK already sponsor TilersForums.co.uk so the move was an obvious one.

More to follow pretty soon.

The Finishing Touch: How to Tile Around Your Bathtub.

Tiling around your bathtub is a fairly straightforward procedure that most homeowners can pull off with just a little learning and patience. Tiles are a good choice for the bathroom, as they are easy to keep clean in what is essentially a very damp atmosphere. Tiles for around a bath may be ceramic, glass or stone. The choice is up to you and depends on things such as the look you are going for and what fits with the décor of the rest of the room.

Getting Started

To get started, you’ll need to make sure you lay all the tiles out very precisely. This is an important step because this is a labor-intensive job when it comes to measuring and cutting. You might also want to consider using mastic instead of thinset for this job. Mastic is much stickier than thinset and will prevent the tiles from slipping down the wall or otherwise out of place.

You will then need to measure the height of each wall that is located above the tub. By dividing this number in half, you can find the halfway point on the wall. Then, measure how many tiles above and below this line will fit. If you end up with less than half a tile at the top and bottom, adjust the center mark to give yourself more space to work with. A small sliver will look odd and may not cut straight or stay stuck.

Laying the Tile

Once you have your tile layout all planned out, start tiling at the center mark and work outwards. Mastic will last about twenty minutes once it is laid on, so don’t lay too much at once. Don’t forget to make the deep ridges with the trowel to help the mastic spread out and adhere to the tiles correctly. In addition, you should use tile spacers to ensure the tiles are laid evenly and that there aren’t any vast expanses of grout. You will also need to leave space between the bottom row and the tub for caulk.

Some tiles will need to be cut to fit edges, or around faucets. Remember the rule: measure twice, cut once. Having a few extra tiles that you need is also useful in case of breakages.

Finishing the Job

Grouting is the last thing you will have to do in order to fill in the gaps between the tiles and hold them fast. Push the grout gently into the gaps and wipe off any excess grout with a damp sponge. A final buff can be done the following day after it has all had a good chance to dry.

If you are not feeling too confident about embarking upon the project on your own, taking a course in tiling may be just what you need, as a course will teach you all the skills you need to make your home improvements look professional.

Preserving the Past for the Future

Cheshire Restoration Services are a unique company and we specialise in the renovation and restoration of period features in your home.

We are passionate about what we do and pride ourselves on giving the very best service and delivering excellent results.

From minton tiles to mullion stone windows, wooden staircases to sandstone floors, fireplaces to fittings, and much more, we take pleasure in transforming the old back to its original condition.

Why replace when you can restore?

Restoration is often more cost effective than replacing with new, and adds character and charm that cannot be achieved with modern imitations. Authentic features and period style will enhance your property and also add value.

Please take a look around our website which will give you more information about our services, then contact us for a free consultation on any restoration project, whatever the size, or for further advice.

http://www.cheshirerestoration.co.uk/

Victorian Geometric Floor Restoration

If you have any mosaic feature, period or contemporary, that requires attention, we offer a full restoration service to revive these attractive architectural features.

Listed below are some examples of common problems:

    * Missing, damaged or loose tiles
* Evidence of subsidence
* Surface Grime – paint, adhesives, sealants
* Ingrained dirt
* Inconsistency with building alterations

For example, shown on the right is a hallway that has suffered from subsidence and other severe damage.

In order to achieve the end result which is shown on the right the following steps were taken:

    * The tiles in the affected area (approx 2 sq.m) were carefully removed
* Prior to the re-installation of the design some structural work was undertaken by a building firm in order to strengthen the joists
* A suitable re-inforced base was fitted in place of the damaged original
* The original tiles were re-fitted and any missing tiles (including encaustic tiles) were replaced with modern equivalents
* Once fixed the floor was then grouted and intensively cleaned

Sheeted Victorian Tiles

Sheeted Victorian Tiles Images Victorian Tiles – Our sheeting service explained

Our unique service provides you with a simple and efficient way to install complex traditional Victorian floor tile designs. The system is designed to be used by a qualified tiler.

Using sheeted tiles speeds up installation and ensures an accurate and precise installation.

We sheet our designs based on drawings, pictures and professional consultation. To date we have completed and supplied many bespoke floors in a variety of designs for both interior and exterior spaces.
